Orthodox Ethos talks about The Jesus Prayer

Portion of transcript is below- starts at around 44 minutes into the talk

maybe we can talk a little bit again
43:12
about the Jesus prayer I’m thinking that this is extremely important today there’s so of course our great the great
43:18
Elder friend when he came to America he came basically
43:23
with one thing in his heart and in his hand and that was the the prayer rope
43:29
and the Jesus prayer and that was the that was what powered him
43:37
throughout the whole 30 40 years that he lived in in the United States and and
43:42
worked in the United States so he worked so hard for everyone to say the prayer
43:48
and I still find that people are very uneducated about the essence of it
43:55
but in particular what I I learned the following and you can let me know maybe we can talk about this aspect of
44:02
it theologically speaking what we see happening in the prayer is this is is
44:07
both purification and illumination simultaneously because when we call Upon
44:13
Jesus to and to have mercy we do that in the Holy Spirit and what is what we’re
44:19
essentially calling upon is the Holy Spirit to come and to cleanse us and that the presence of the Holy Spirit
44:26
both cleanses and and enlightens at the very same time simultaneously you’re being cleansed and
44:32
you’re being enlightened by the presence of the holy spirit so you’re constantly calling upon
44:37
Christ to send and bring like and Pentecost again him his presence the presence of
44:44
the Divine energies himself the uncreated grace and that that is what purifies and that is what illumines
44:52
and so and then what besides it because I think that maybe many people think
44:57
about the Jesus prayers as something that happens here and here only
45:02
in the mind and in the lips and of course if it just is in the mind and the lips then it’s not it’s not working
45:08
throughout all of man to do it the work that is intended so this whole process of bringing it
45:15
down into the heart which is and is it can we say
45:20
I would say it includes but it cannot oh it’s not only about compunction and
45:26
Contrition right but you have to you have to have the pain of heart for the prayer to work yes
45:33
but it’s more than that do you have any thoughts about it Yes actually always I
45:39
think in the previous interview I I mentioned already a lot of people who
45:44
like per separately they would like to have a a joyful Christ but the unders the
45:51
misunderstanding of This Joy is the the taking away of pain
45:57
and that’s what makes psychology or many other forms or humanisms attracted to some people who
46:05
are in pain because the desire is just simply to elevate the pain um
46:11
the problem which most people don’t understand that’s the part the the Paradigm we take from um from a woman
46:19
who’s giving birth to a to a child this is in the Psalms as well and it’s the
46:26
metaphor that’s given to us to understand the the joy that comes from
46:31
us or come handy given to us by Christ is the joy that comes from the cross
46:37
that’s why the third antifone is very clear blessed are those who mourn so
46:42
there should be an important aspect of mourning but our morning should not be
46:48
psychological morning we should be mourning for not being able to utilize
46:53
our time in making ourselves in the person of Christ that what we should be mourning
47:00
on like I have wasted so much time watching TV I have wasted so much time holding on to anger I’ve wasted so much
47:07
time on not making Christ the center of my life is what we should be mourning on and when a person more when the person
47:14
understands that there is something that causes pain and I’m the one who’s in my pain
47:20
and resize the Jesus prayer then you will understand that he is in
47:27
the same position as those people who have called on the name of the Lord and where he is
47:35
but that’s the problem when people um try to do the Jesus prayer out of
47:41
formality some people will have a very big prayer room
47:46
in the church but they don’t have the same prayer group inside the room um it doesn’t work perfectly some people
47:55
they like to um appear by just like right like the
48:00
Paris like the Pharisee well all these things so the problem is not in the
48:05
Jesus prayers the problem is in the attitude of those people who that’s
48:11
that’s why I understand some girl you said oh don’t follow them Don’t Follow The Apprentice because they are fanatics
48:16
the problem is not on those people who are doing it wrong the problem is for
48:21
those people who are not doing it properly that includes all of us
48:29
we should have the same trust that the same Christ who walk on earth in the
48:36
flesh or restore the sight of the blind can lovingly restored us to the very
48:42
person who who he is you said something important I think
48:49
that uh reminded me of something that recently uh the morning the pain of
48:55
heart uh and all of the Beatitudes if we if
49:00
it’s not for Christ and in Christ then it’s going to be ultimately
49:06
egotistical and worthless yes so someone wrote me recently a suffering soul and
49:14
she asked me I weep uh uncontrollably at times and I say well what are you what
49:20
are you weeping for well I I’m weeping for she told me things and I said well this is this this
49:28
is for Christ this is for the loss of Christ
49:34
this is for the love of Christ this is for your sins no no what you told me
49:40
none of that so is this weeping is not the Weeping that’s unto salvation that’s
49:45
a fruit of the spirit it’s a it’s a self-centered weeping that you’re not getting what you want or you’re not you
49:51
you you you’re sad about these things there’s a Melancholy you know so it’s
49:58
very important for people to understand that it’s not just pain generally it’s not paying for ours for
50:06
our not getting what we want or something like it’s obviously when we say pain of heart it has love in it and
50:13
love for God and love for man it has a pain of heart which is a compunction a Contrition it has it has a a uh you know
50:20
a blessedness because it’s bringing us closer to the likeness it’s making us more like Christ and and if it’s not
50:29
then it’s not then it’s not of Christ so all of these things that we talk about
50:35
in the church everything is meant to operate for our Salvation which means
50:40
likeness which means to become like Christ and acquire the virtues to be
50:45
filled with the virtues it’s the to become like to the only goal
50:51
guard only created us to become like him God created us to become like him I
50:57
think this is this all our fathers even the fathers in the west unfortunately because they have changed so much in not
51:05
only in their theology but also in their piety in their liturgy that’s why they cannot make sense of this they cannot
51:11
see it in their prayers the moment they they come talk or rationalize that Grace
51:17
is created then you lost everything he does lost everything yeah this also
51:24
reminds me something we were talking about before we started and that is that when you see someone talking about
51:29
either saying theosis is not the end of our life or that Grace is created this
51:35
is a confirmation that they did not have the experience of theosis and therefore of Salvation and therefore they’re
51:41
they’re outside the church with that that isn’t that right yes that’s true that’s why that’s the importance of
51:48
discernment because when you see that’s the I always tell people
51:53
look for a priest who talks about theosis hmm because the priest who talks
52:00
about theosis will never neglect the holy liturgy The Divine Liturgy the
52:05
Eucharist the priest’s focuses theosis will never lose sight of the proper
52:11
dogmatic consciousness of the church the priest who is focused on theosis
52:17
will not will not have a personality call like I told them
52:22
but you’ll notice this a lack of intellectual people academic theologians
52:29
they will write about anything and everything except the uses because it’s
52:35
an absence of the Divine experience not because God does not want us to experience it but because we refuse it
52:42
because the prerequisite to theosis is genuine repentance and repentance is not
52:48
about being sad about but repentance is
52:55
having the ability to surrender to God everything in spite of all the pain
53:01
that’s the very that’s very difficult a lot of people said oh I love Christ no no no a lot of people they we love the
53:09
Lord by our lips that’s why I I tell people immerse yourself with
53:15
the gospel then you will understand this house and when you understand the sounds you
53:21
will understand the whole prayers of the church everything will make sense because the sun speaks about the person
53:28
of Christ if it’s not been so many parishes and so many priests
53:35
brother praise our brother priests discourage people from reciting criticisms he said oh it’s for mocks
53:41
it’s not for monks it’s the prayer of the church it is the prayer of the
53:48
church so that’s why for me initially when people ask me for a prayer they tell them first read the gospels and
53:55
then read cathisma 17. during the day because it will
54:01
and they they have shared it to me after years months of having this discipline
54:07
particularly reading the participants 17. it helps them understand themselves better
54:13
they still have problems but they’re not following problems because they understand these problems is necessary
54:19
for me to mourn because without problem I told them look look at King David when
54:25
he was four but he was born as a Shepherd he was being obedient to God but once he was
54:32
touched by richness what happened to him what happened so this is the problem with when we when
54:39
we have false anthropology but when we have proper understanding of ourselves the weakness of our human will but such
54:46
weakness can be energized by the divine grace the uncraised grace yes this is a
54:53
paradox that if you that is hard to logically understand but
54:59
it’s very self-evident to me and it’s in the patristic writings and that is that
55:06
knowledge of God is impossible without after nausea which is knowledge of self and vice versa you can’t know yourself
55:13
unless you know God so coming back to theosis can one reach self-knowledge without
55:21
theosis as the clear aim understanding purpose and
55:28
practice the goal of our life can you come to self-knowledge
55:34
a personal knowledge of the self because our true identity is only in
55:40
Christ you will only see portions of of the person the Fallen man you will see
55:47
aspects but you if you don’t see Christ Who You’re Made In His Image yes if you
55:54
don’t see him clearly you want to understand yourself clearly no that’s why people until now divorce
56:00
psychology as if it is outside the church our true identity is
56:07
in the person of Christ but the person of Christ can only be understood within the church and live by
56:14
the sacraments without the sacraments there’s no understanding of Christ there is no understanding of
56:23
Christopher look at some priests some priests they they talk about everything
56:28
but they never participate in The Divine Liturgy
56:33
um they they don’t prioritize it but look at some priests they don’t talk much but
56:40
everything is about the Divine Liturgy this also points I think further because
56:48
we’re talking about theosis we’re talking about the Jesus prayer we’re talking about self-knowledge and God knowledge
56:54
this also points to why the church is so strict about heresy and about about wrong
57:01
teaching because if if again you if if salvation and
57:08
self-knowledge is impossible without the knowledge of God and if you have an idea about God that is wrong especially the
57:16
idea that that there that you’re not able to participate in his uncreated energies the people who deny theosis or
57:23
accept created Grace unfortunately like the Latin uh Catholicism they they talk about
57:29
created Grace which is impossible there’s no such thing as created Grace there’s only uncreated Grace because it
57:36
is God himself so if that’s if that if we talk about created Grace or we deny
57:41
theosis as the aim of our life which unfortunately apparently Pope shanuda the famous Coptic Pope for many many
57:48
years he’s proposed now he apparently denies that the patristic inheritance puts that as the goal and
57:56
the aim and the purpose of our life which is unbelievable to me it’s tragic
58:01
but in any case if that’s the case if that is happening denial of it outright
58:06
or denial of it in essence because you don’t accept the uncreated energies and divine energies and participating in
58:12
them which I I is a classical view
58:17
it’s among some in the West then you can never achieve theosis in
58:23
other words salvation is impossible so it’s all connected and that’s why the church is so should be so careful about
58:32
Orthodoxy about the right teaching yes the understanding of the any any person
58:38
who starts with theosis can never never discuss this without this classic muscle
58:45
heresy
58:55
himself in the church he has one person the second person the Holy Trinity the
59:02
third word of God I tell people to find five fingers two Natures two wheels so
59:07
one person two Natures two wheels at the moment you only have one will cries
59:15
he cannot impact something to you and this is not my this is not me
59:21
will Remains the will remains if it’s not assumed it doesn’t it’s not healed yes that’s right with Theologian yes
59:29
that’s why it’s not possible that’s why we say when a priest talks about this it is inevitable that the praise will also
59:37
speak about heresy hmm so it’s not if the British is just talking about theocs
59:42
but not talking about what prevents the uses this Heritage and repented scenes
59:48
it’s a brand of Competency so you will not a true discussion of theosis it’s like
59:55
true discussion of Christ is talking about his emergency and his Justice can
1:00:00
you imagine a doctor never talking about the sickness yeah that’s the problem only only about
1:00:06
what a healthy person is but but people are sick you have to talk to them about the nature of the sickness and how you
1:00:11
fall into and what lifestyle leads to this sickness both you have to always together both
1:00:19
and as we say both the one and the other have to be when the pastor or whatever
1:00:25
religious leader you are you are dealing with only presents to you a price
1:00:30
who is just making giving gifts but not the Christ who heals but involves
1:00:37
repentance as part of it doesn’t call to repentance how many people are not calling us to repentance today but
1:00:43
before we depend to understand what we are wrong about yes like the sins like
1:00:49
I’m very important about this I tell people um what happened during pandemic
1:00:58
prevention of venerating the icons um did not come from the government
1:01:05
it come from our grounds from our clergy and they again you can explain a lot you
1:01:12
can use many other words but why do we have to generate the icon not because of Pride not because of of delusion quality
1:01:22
but because Dogma heals Dogma guarantees the healing of the
1:01:29
person into becoming Christ that’s the function of that’s why sense of prone is
1:01:35
very clear of having a dogmatic Consciousness we have to learn from the
1:01:40
Saints and if people said oh he said no we cannot make excuse oh because Bishop’s enough
1:01:46
what is wrong is the wrong what is wrong we can make it we can make it sound nice
1:01:52
that’s true but still wrong but still wrong and the good thing about
1:02:00
the church that at the moment we admit we are wrong and we are repent that’s it there’s nothing for a long drama yeah
1:02:07
you can think about another example here you can’t think about repentance if you
1:02:12
don’t think about what you’re what you’re reorienting toward yes because repentance is is a reorientation toward
1:02:20
Christ and you can’t talk about Christ without repentance because then
1:02:26
you’re acting like it’s not necessary to reorient ourselves to Christ you have to talk about the whole process of
1:02:34
of unity with God and the Lord talks about it continually
1:02:41
almost all the stories of the Gospel are filled with one who’s reorienting himself towards right there’s one this
1:02:48
one Pastor I’ve seen the video you have so many followers and the pastor claim
1:02:53
that there is nothing in the scripture that the Lord speaks about repenting from sins and in my mind the very first
1:03:02
word of the Lord in the Holy gospel Apostle mark it’s not
1:03:08
not to read the Bible a personal relationship with me repent
1:03:14
so a lot of people don’t understand that the call for repentance is the call for
1:03:19
rejoicing that’s why the church is the herald of repentance because she is the
1:03:25
she is she alone can call us to rejoice but also a bit with the Saints because
1:03:34
when do we when do we Rejoice most even on a human level when we’re United to
1:03:39
those we love yes that’s true as a former managed as a former marriage
1:03:45
counselor I tell people what You observe What You observe with couples the moment
1:03:50
you are arguing with one another yours you’re you’re very you are not break
1:03:56
from anger you realize your mistake and admit it you don’t you also discovered
1:04:03
how loving the other person is to you you understand oh so I have been this stupid for that long and this person
1:04:10
still put up with me so you see even in the psychological aspect the
1:04:16
psychological level the awareness of one’s shortcomings
1:04:21
and that willfulness to please the other person to be changed
1:04:28
so that the other person will be happy it’s the same crisis to us he changed he
1:04:35
changed from from being an invisible God to a visible God to us
1:04:40
so it can be close to us that’s why the the good thing about the Eucharist is
1:04:46
that it is the perfect Covenant that God cannot be separated with us anymore
1:04:52
um because you mentioned the Eucharist you mentioned the Eucharist and it also leads me to another aspect of theosis
1:05:00
it’s a the Eucharist is the condemnation of all gnosticism yes and it’s all all
1:05:06
ideas of Salvation which do not incorporate the body because the Eucharist means that to be
1:05:14
truly saved to achieve the likeness to be deified glorified to reach theosis
1:05:20
you have to include the body you have to have a the physical communion of the
1:05:27
body and blood the bread and the wine which becomes the body and blood you have to consume that
1:05:32
so another aspect of theosis is this in the inclusion of the body so the body
1:05:39
has to become like Christ not just the spirit of the soul the soul of man which
1:05:45
includes frustrations fasting alms giving the body has to participate in
1:05:52
everything and I think that’s also something that we’re very surrounded by gnosticism today
1:05:58
and this heretical uh idea of Salvation in the new age and all this even a lot
1:06:04
of protestantism is Gnostic it doesn’t talk of course there is no Eucharist in most Protestants today they don’t
1:06:09
understand so another aspect is how often are you participating in the Holy Communion and
1:06:17
how are you approaching Holy Communion if you’re not properly approaching and and often then you will not make
1:06:24
progress in achieving the likeness with enthalsis yeah that’s true so I appropriate I
1:06:31
always tell people read the the work of what hero monkey orgas the one of the
1:06:36
weird Albertsons that he’s he wrote a commentary on the old Eucharist The
1:06:43
Divine Liturgy is very very nice for some people who are more academic in terms of their approach textbook like
1:06:50
approaches adapters liturgy but for me I always tell people
1:06:57
first gospels meaningful inquirers because they don’t they cannot have the equality sports but never divorce the
1:07:04
reading of the Gospel from the life of the church because only the church can explain the Sacred Scriptures because
1:07:10
she produces and the scriptures is only understood
1:07:18
that’s why I always say people I find it very problematic when people are more
1:07:24
attracted they can go visit go miles visiting a mainstreaming icon
1:07:31
but can never go to the parish to have the Divine Liturgy I told them this is terribly wrong this reminds me of an
1:07:38
event I had very early in Orthodoxy 30 years ago I was in Chicago and there was a murder
1:07:45
streaming icon of the mother of God of Chicago at the antiochian parish and I was sitting there in Bishop basil
1:07:52
with the antiochian he’s now retired Bishop of Wichita he was talking and they were asking him
1:07:59
you know this is a miracle and he said yes it’s a miracle but we have a miracle every Sunday at Divine Liturgy a far
1:08:06
greater miracle the great miracle of the body and blood The Bread and Wine becoming the body and
1:08:13
blood of Christ we live with Miracles every every day
1:08:18
yes and I like that very much that that was one of the things that really
1:08:23
stayed with me uh it puts everything in perspective
1:08:29
and you realize that everything God gives It ultimately has to come back to
1:08:35
the communion of the body and blood uh otherwise it’s it’s it’s it’s it’s
1:08:41
still born it’s not going to bring about change and if you go to the icon that’s
1:08:48
more gushing as a as someone who goes to a uh
1:08:53
you know a Circ like you know says that people want bread and circuses if you go
1:09:00
there as someone going to see a uh an event and uh and the show
1:09:06
well you’ve gone uh it’s pointless it’s worthless you know right and tell people
1:09:12
how many mere streaming I could have stopped streaming meal
1:09:17
a lot of them but the church has never stopped offering Divine Liturgy the
1:09:24
church has never stopped nourishing us but the very body and blood of the Lord
1:09:29
so I’m not I’m not against me steaming icon I like them I collect meal for my
1:09:34
fellow Filipinos I give it to to parishes but for me this should point
1:09:40
you to Christ and even tell it to my to my fellow Filipinos if my priesthood is
1:09:46
not pointing up to Christ I would appreciate if you’re the first to condemn me hmm because that’s what this would help
1:09:54
me our Christianity our marriage our
1:09:59
parenting should only be directed to the person of Christ
1:10:05
marriage because the marriage is not centered interest well in that point in
1:10:10
the Christ again does not mean pointing to him uh in history or pointed to him in the
1:10:18
pages of scriptures only or mainly but pointed to him in the living presence in
1:10:24
the church which means the Divine Eucharist and all the Mysteries and and
1:10:29
our participation in the Mysteries uh the priest’s main purpose is to bring
1:10:34
everyone he’s a mystog which means he’s initiating you into the Mysteries and
1:10:40
the Mystery of the Incarnation and the Mystery of the church and if he’s not doing that
1:10:46
it’s a tragedy it was but wait wait why do I have to become most of those because you would like to become like
1:10:53
rights hmm if you if you don’t want to become like Christ we’re not going to force Orthodoxy to you
1:10:59
yes but you have the image but the lightness can own is only possible
1:11:04
within the church within the baptism compassion
1:11:10
studies of the church prayers and the peak of this is the Divine nucleus
1:11:16
I I’m afraid that many of among the heterodox and maybe among some orthodox
1:11:22
they think that they’ve arrived when they’ve acquired a tremendous amount of
1:11:27
knowledge about Christ about the church about the history about the theology
1:11:33
uh they’ve learned perhaps all the prayers by heart they’ve learned The
1:11:38
Divine Liturgy or or whatever by heart and they’ve become experts
1:11:43
they’ve become experts in and they could probably teach a class or two maybe or they could become professors
1:11:50
and they think this is this is what God is calling us to and and you know if it
1:11:55
wasn’t so tragic it might be funny that we’ve made
1:12:01
acquiring knowledge about it’s almost it’s barlamism yes that’s the problem
1:12:07
it’s barlamism it’s not it’s we’ve lost sight of that’s exactly what barlam said
1:12:13
we acquire you become an intellectually very you know knowledgeable about things
1:12:19
and you perfect your reason and you’ve that’s the purpose of your life in Christ it’s heretical that’s why I’m
1:12:26
surprised with some conferences happening around in America some more of those confidence is happening in America
1:12:33
I attended a particular conference in America and what the the very first
1:12:39
thing that is neglected is the prayer was attended by monastics by Bishops but
1:12:46
and then the prayer and then ask why why are we not because there are some people
1:12:51
here like that’s why I said yeah anyway this is kind of confusing that’s why I always
1:12:58
tell my fellow Filipinos or under our spiritual care I don’t give any blessing for anyone to
1:13:04
participate in online debates or any online discussion I tell them
1:13:10
first your knowledge about the Orthodox Church are limited to those things that
1:13:16
you have already endured or suffered for if you haven’t suffered this you’re not
1:13:22
don’t speak about this don’t speak to you I told them but oh I
1:13:27
like your system I myself theosis but the only reason I’m talking about this
1:13:33
is because I would like to give to and make people understand that this the center of our Orthodox faith and Mark my
1:13:40
Priestly function is to teach the people about the way I haven’t achieved it and
1:13:47
there’s no none of us achieved in this life it’s only achieved with the life to come but started here
1:13:54
but I thought that it’s very important for us to bring into the open don’t talk about many other things
1:14:01
I like to know about this this is nice if you are if your heart is
1:14:09
Guided by someone more experienced than you
1:14:20
we might want to say that when you say it’s not achieved in this life you want to say that it’s not fully achieved it’s
1:14:28
not perfect it’s like it’s infected yeah because other people I how people are
1:14:33
saying how come we still commit sin because I thought that God wants us to
1:14:40
be victorious that’s why we have to not to provision but we are attacked by this situation
1:14:47
and I have access because now I’m living in Las Vegas for a year and in Las Vegas
1:14:52
I surrounded by mountains so I tell the parishioners if you think that you’re so
1:14:58
holy enough you can go out of the parish and start commanding the mountains to move if one of them move then we will
1:15:05
all pray to God and glorify you but as long as you are not moving any mountains
1:15:11
here in the state of Nevada and you’re not pouring snow in the state of Nevada please don’t think you’re
1:15:17
above the church don’t start judging people no but even the Saints who are poor
1:15:24
Miracles were there not to judge because they know the implication for this is
1:15:29
very very difficult it’s been your life but again so I also don’t want to fall to the other end because people say oh
1:15:36
but how about some praise teaching has the right things they are not judging so
1:15:42
that I the fathers our sins are very clear if it’s about myself I can endure
1:15:48
everything but if it’s about Dogma we should speak it was about the
1:15:54
teachings in the personal Christ is about the liturgical life of the church
1:16:00
all of us should speak together just like I said during hobit it would have
1:16:05
been more pleasing to the Lord if all the Bishops the all the priests would
1:16:12
have made one voice and said we will bring out our holy icons we will bring
1:16:18
out our holy relics then we will beg God we will to show his mercy
1:16:26
and I’m speaking I’m speaking of this as someone because some people think you
1:16:32
don’t know who I had I had it for 59 days so I’m not
1:16:38
speaking out of the blue I’m saying that if only we could have done this whether people have died of it or people over
1:16:46
here from it it doesn’t matter because the important aspect is not the healing away from Kobe but the important aspect
1:16:53
is the making of the human will in the will of Christ that inspired whether
1:16:59
it’s covered whereas this we should be one with friends maybe we can close with the following
1:17:06
just a quick discussion we see fruits of the of the presence of the holy spirit in the lives of those contemporary
1:17:12
Saints and elders and some of the things we see the gifts of God
1:17:17
um which unbelievably to some of us might it might be hard to understand but
1:17:23
they’re actually among the great gifts that come to those who reached high levels of spiritual
1:17:30
life we might call them in the realm of theosis after great illumination you see
1:17:35
things like uh what we say in Greek uh Clairvoyance
1:17:42
and then also there’s there’s the the idea that you see not only
1:17:48
the prophetically the future but you also see in the in the inside of the
1:17:53
soul of the men The Odyssey you can the voice the God illumines for instance in
1:17:59
the life of Elder Ephraim he was so purified and so illuminate and prayed prayed constantly that Jesus prayer had
1:18:06
it in his heart that God allowed him to know the hearts of his of his the people confession to him and he revealed and
1:18:13
I’ve heard this from many people personal friends of mine he revealed their whole life to them yes and and
1:18:21
told them what they needed to confess for instance so these are gifts of the Spirit but I was reading and hearing an
1:18:28
elder recently that said that these are lower end gives and I chuckled I said
1:18:34
these things are so beyond us and yet in a way they’re considered lower and one
1:18:41
of the reasons why they’re given is the main reason why they’re given is not for the person
1:18:46
the saintly person we’re precisely because it is going to help the salvation of his neighbor so
1:18:52
God is working through this person and and essentially doing Mission and pastoral work and for the sake of the
1:18:58
person he gives them these gifts and so it’s yeah it’s God working and so
1:19:04
the person doesn’t say well these are my gifts and he feels that he’s achieved something you know where for from us we
1:19:10
look at it we say well this is an amazing how could he maintain that and not become proud
1:19:17
well precisely because he feels it totally God and not him it’s he not he recognizes that it’s God’s work and it’s
1:19:25
for not for his purpose and for his sake but for the sake of the neighbor and I’m
1:19:30
saying all this because I want people to realize that the fruit of the fruit of Theo’s is the people who arrive in this
1:19:37
life to a degree of theirs and that’s God determines that that God determines who achieves in this life a degree of
1:19:44
theosis and manifest that to other people and for his purposes but you see that there for the sake of love and the
1:19:51
sake of the neighbor and the sake of the body of Christ it’s always for it the
1:19:57
gifts of God are always for salvation and not selfishly for one person but for
1:20:03
the whole body and and so if we if we make progress on the path of Salvation we’re not going to
1:20:10
be filled with any what will be filled with is that which is going to be beneficial and building up the body of
1:20:16
Christ and good for our neighbor it’s always going to just like our Lord everything he did he did for the Salvation of everyone so the same thing
1:20:23
with a person who makes progress in theologists and the likeness becoming like Christ what will be the fruit what
1:20:29
will be the the end result that those around him will be benefited he’ll
1:20:37
live for them and for God it will be a greater increase in love it’ll be a greater increasing communion these are
1:20:44
the things that show forth it’s not going to be um you know I don’t know a guru type of
1:20:52
um you know Matt wonderworker or something and uh I I think there’s very
1:20:57
bizarre ideas of what theosis is in the minds of a lot of people yes the moment we understand theosis
1:21:05
away from the church that is when we read books and we we like what
1:21:14
we read during pocs but we are um afraid of the services of the church
1:21:20
that’s not to use it same thing same thing in relationship like people talk
1:21:25
about love if you love if you say you profess you love the person but you are
1:21:31
not willing to sacrifice that’s not love they always says that’s where the Lord
1:21:36
is God tells us that’s why you like the reason why I like deal is because it captures what the Lord Divine gave us
1:21:44
the highest command he said that love as I have loved you by his grace we are
1:21:51
capable of loving like him and that is very very beautiful if
1:21:57
husbands and wives will be capable of loving like Christ there are no divorce
1:22:03
there are no abortion of course there are no abortion and it’s interesting that there has to if you understand God
1:22:11
is love and he says God Saint John says God is love then he could not remain alone
1:22:20
yeah he had to he had to it was an extension of his very being that he
1:22:26
created man because we just said love is not love if it’s not given away it’s a famous saying
1:22:33
right so God as love there must be
1:22:39
theosis for man these things are inseparable that’s why it’s not possible for orthodox to have like a personal
1:22:45
savior like I just confess Lord You Are My Savior no we are always known to love someone else
1:22:54
because we are loved only someone who is who experienced God’s love
1:23:00
loves the other person and this of course and the image of Love is the cross yes
1:23:08
very very critical you give bread God gives us brother and blood you give
1:23:14
little sacrifice God gives the Holy Spirit you give blood you receive the
1:23:20
spirit so but there’s always the giving and the getting the giving and the
1:23:25
gambling we give our frail human will God heals it into his will and transform
1:23:32
us into his life so I think this is really really put any hope and I pray that a lot of people
1:23:39
will will continuously struggle towards the uses not just simply uh checking
1:23:46
what kind of cross they’re making what form of hand whether this way or this way but all of this should be understood
1:23:54
as something centered on the person of Christ indeed thank you very much
1:24:01
today and uh and giving us spiritual food for the road for the journey The
1:24:08
Narrow Path I wish you safe travels we look forward to seeing you again soon
1:24:14
and uh maybe maybe we’ll see you in the fall as we spoke about yeah but uh uh
1:24:20
have a wonderful summer and pray for us thank you prayers thank you thank you thank you Father glory to God
1:24:34
